Section 2
SECTION 2: Hazards identification
DESCRIPTION OF HAZARDS For the battery cell, chemical materials are stored in a hermetically sealed metal case, designed to withstand temperatures and pressures encountered during normal use. As a result, during normal use, there is no physical danger of ignition or explosion and chemical danger of hazardous materials' leakage However, if exposed to a fire, added mechanical shocks, decomposition, added electric stress by misuse, the gas release vent will be operated. The battery cell case will be breached at the extreme. Hazardous materials may be released Moreover, if heated strongly by the surrounding fire, acrid or harmful fume may be emitted

Hazard statements
Flammable solid Catches fire spontaneously if exposed to air Harmful if swallowed Causes severe skin burns and eye damage Causes skin irritation May cause an allergic skin reaction Harmful if inhaled May cause allergy or asthma symptoms or breathing difficulties if inhaled Suspected of causing genetic defects Suspected of causing cancer May damage the unborn child Causes damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure Very toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects
Potential health effects
Inhalation: Electrolyte inhalation affects the respiratory tract membrane and the lungs. Fume may cause a cough, chest pain and dyspnea. Bronchitis and pneumonia may occur. Possibly could be carcinogen. Skin contact: The electrolyte skin contact affects the skin seriously and may cause dermatitis. Eye contact: The electrolyte leaked from the battery cell is a strong alkali. When it goes into an eye, the cornea may be affected and it may lead to blindness. Ingestion: The electrolyte ingestion irritates the mouth and the throat and seriously results in vomiting, nausea, hematemesis, stomach pains and diarrhea.
Environmental effects
Since a battery cell remains in the environment, do not throw out into the environment.
Precautionary statements
Prevention – Obtain special instructions before use. Do not handle until all precautions have been read and understood. Do not breathe powders, dust, mist, fumes or vapors. Use only outdoors or in well ventilated areas. Wear protective gloves, clothing, eye/face protection. Wear respiratory protection if necessary or required. Wash thoroughly after handling. Storage/Disposal – Store in a secure area. If shredded do not store in large piles but ensure material is thinly dispersed and flat. Dispose of material in accordance with local, regional, national and/or international regulations.
2.3 Other hazards
Dust or powders may present an explosion hazard if allowed to accumulate in an industrial or manufacturing environment. Coatings and oils applied to the product may enhance flammability.
