Potential health effects

Gross overexposure by inhal a t ion t o HFC- 43-lOmee may cause suffocat i on if air i s displaced by vapors and central nervous system stimulation with increased activity or sleeplessness, tremors or convul sions. These effects may be followed by central nervous sys t em depression wi t h dizzi ness, confusion , incoordination, drowsiness or unconsciousness . Based on data from other fluorocarbons, gross overexposure to HFC-43-lOmee may cause irregular heart beat with a strange sensation in the chest, "heart thumping" apprehension, lightheadedness, feeling of fainting, dizziness, weakness, sometimes progressing to loss of consci ousness and death . Intentional misuse or deliberate inhalation may cause death without warning. Vapor reduces oxygen availabl e for breat hing and is heavier than air. Immediate effects to HFC-43-lOmee by skin contact may i nclude sl ight i rritati on with i tching, redness or swelling . Repeated and/or prolonged exposure may cause defat t ing of the skin with i tchi ng, redness or rash . Based on animal data, significant skin permeation, and s ystemic toxicity after s kin cont act, appears unlikely. Immediate effects of overexposure to HFC- 43-lOmee by eye contact may include eye i rritation wit h t eari ng, pai n or blurred vision . The major ingestion hazard of HFC-43-lOmee is aspiration (liquid entering the lungs during ingest ion or vomiting) which may result in "chemical pneumonia . " Symptoms i nclude coughing, gasping, choking, shortness of breath, bl uish discoloration of the skin, rapi d breathing and heart rate, and fever . Pulmonary edema or bleeding, drowsiness , confusion, coma and seizures may occur i n more seri ous cases . Symptoms may develop immediately or as late as 24 hours after exposure, dependi ng on how much chemical entered the lungs . Increased susceptibility to t he effects of HFC- 43- lOmee may be observed i n per sons with pre-existing disease of the cent ral nervous system or the cardiovascular system. Inhalat i on of t -DCE may cause central nervous system depression with dizziness , confusi on, i ncoordinat ion, drowsiness or unconsciousness; or tremors, nausea , vomi t i ng, weakness , and abdominal cramps . Other effects may include i r regular heart beat with a strange sensation in the chest, "hear t thumping", apprehensi on, l ightheadedness , feeling of fainting, dizziness, or weakness . Skin contact with t-DCE may cause severe irritation with burning, redness, swelling, pain or rash . Eye contact with t -DCE may cause severe eye irritation wi t h tearing, pain or blurred visi on . Ingestion of t - DCE may cause pulmonary edema (body fluid i n the lungs) with cough, wheezing, abnormal lung sounds, possibly progressing to severe shortness of breath and bluish Page 2 ot 13 52 MSDS Number: 6093FR di scol orati on of the ski n: symptoms may be delayed. Ingestion may also cause pathol ogical changes in the l i ver , central nervous syst em depressi on wi th di zziness , confusion, incoordination , drowsiness or unconsciousness, and structural (pat hol ogical) changes i n heart muscl e tissue. The fatal dose of Methyl Alcohol by i ngest ion is from 60 to 250 ml . Inhalation of Methyl Alcohol may cause irritation of the nose and throat wit h sneezing, sore throat or runny nose. Skin contact with Methyl Alcohol may cause irritation with itchi ng, burning, redness, swel ling or rash . Skin permeati on may occur in amounts capabl e of produci ng the effects of systemic toxicity. Eye cont act with Met hyl Alcohol may cause eye irritation with tearing, pai n or blurred vision . Ingestion of Methyl Alcohol may cause irritation of t he digestive tract with stomach pain, hear tburn, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea ; however there may be no s ymptoms at all . Inhalation, ingestion or s kin contact with Methyl Al cohol may cause temporary mild depression of the central nervous system with dizziness , confusi on, incoordi nation or drowsiness followed by an asympt omatic period usually ranging from 12 to 24 hours . Metabolic acidosis develops followed by ocular toxicity (visual dis turbance including blindness) . Other effects include non-specific effects such as headache, nausea and weakness . Gross overexposure may cause pathological changes in the liver and kidneys; nerve damage with numbness, weakness or muscl e rigidi ty; tremors; convul sions; and fatality . Increased susceptibil ity to the effects of Methyl Alcohol may be observed i n persons with pre- exi sting disease of the nervous system, visual system, liver, kidneys , and cardiovascular system. Short-term overexposure by inhalation to Nitromethane may cause irritation of t he nose and throat with sneezing, sore throat or runny nose. Based on animal data repeated and/or prolonged exposure may cause irritation of nose, throat, and l ungs with cough, difficulty breathing or shortness of breat h, pathological changes in the liver, central nervous syst em depression with dizziness, confusion, incoordination, drowsiness or unconsciousness, peripheral nervous system effects with tingl ing, pain, or l oss of sensat ion in extremities whi ch may be accompanied by weakness or l oss of muscle control, altered blood cell counts, impaired functioni ng of the blood-forming system with alterat ions i n bl ood cell counts and/or anemia, effects on the nervous tissue, and cli nical pathological changes of the thyroid. Skin contact wi th Nitromethane may cause skin irritation with i tching, burning, redness, swelling or rash . Eye contact with Ni tromethane may cause eye irritation with tearing, pai n or blurred vision . Based on animal data, ingestion of Ni tromethane may cause abnormal liver function wi th altered enzyme l evels i n blood, or abnormal ki dney f unction wi th altered results on blood tests . Carcinogenicity Information The following components are listed by IARC, NTP, OSHA or ACGIH as carci nogens .
