SECTION 2: Hazards identification
EMERGENCY OVERVIEW**** CORROSIVE LIQUID Harmful if inhaled, swallowed, or exposed to skin or eyes. Can cause chemical burns to eyes, respiratory system, gastrointestinal system and/or skin upon direct contact. Can be irritating to eyes, skin and/or respiratory tract if contact is frequent or prolonged.
Principle Routes of Exposure
Eyes, Skin, Inhalation, Ingestion TARGET ORGANS Eyes, Skin, Respiratory System, Ingestion
Potential health effects
Acute Effects Inhalation Can cause chemical burns to the respiratory tract with the production of lung edema which can result in shortness of breath, wheezing, choking, chest pain, and impairment of lung function. continued Inhalation of high concentrations may result in permanent lung damage. Can cause moderate to severe irritation to respiratory tract upon prolonged, repeated exposures. Eye Can cause chemical burns upon direct contact. Can cause moderate to severe irritation upon prolonged, repeated exposures. Skin Can cause chemical burns upon direct contact. Can cause moderate to severe skin irritation upon prolonged, repeated exposure. Ingestion Harmful if swallowed. Can cause chemical burns upon direct contact. Can cause moderate to severe skin irritation upon prolonged, repeated exposure.
Potential chronic health
Product has not been tested as a whole to determine its long-term effects. The product does contain ingredients that potentially may affect the following target organs as a result from repeated excessive exposures: Eyes, Skin, Lungs, Genes. Carcinogenicity None IARC: N/AP NTP: N/AP OSHA: N/AP Sodium hypochlorite has been shown to produce damage to genetic material when tested in vitro. Studies in vivo have shown no evidence of mutagenic potential for this material. Chemicals with potent biocidal activity, typical of hypochlorite compounds, may compromise the integrity of many of the treated cells which remain viable during an in vitro assay. This result would likely produce cellular changes giving rise to a response indicative of a mutation. It is judged that the risk of genetic damage is insignificant for sodium hypochlorite because of its biocidal activity, lack of mutagenicity in vivo, and failure to produce a carcinogenic response.
Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure
Asthma and other respiratory ailments; and/or cardiovascular disease ___________________________________________________________________________________
