2.1 Classification of the substance or mixture

Causes eye and skin burns. Causes digestive and respiratory tract burns. / IDENTIFICATION Sodium hypochlorite may cause methemoglobinemia , which is characterized by chocolate brown coloured blood, headache , weakness, dizziness, breath shortness, cyanosis , rapid heart rate , unconsciousness and possible death. Signs and Symptoms of Exposure – A physician should be contacted if anyone develops any signs or symptoms and suspects that they are caused by exposure.

Principle Routes of Exposure

Product can effect the body if it is inhaled or it comes in contact with the eyes or skin. It can also effect the body if it is swallowed. Summary of Acute Health Hazards Swallowed – Ingestion is highly irritating to the mouth , throat and gastric tract causing a painful burning sensation. Eye – Irritating to the eye/ Prolonged contact may cause damage due to chemical conjunctivitis. Skin – Moderately irritating. Product causes a mild burning sensation on the skin and irritates due to the defatting effect caused by the product alkalinity. Inhaled – Inhalation of vapours is mildly irritating to the upper respiratory tract and causes headache and nausea if inhaled at elevated levels or for prolonged periods. Chronic – Repeated skin exposure can lead to dermatitis. Summary of Chronic Health Hazards- The chronic local effect may consist of multiple areas of superficial destruction of the skin or of primary irritant dermatitis. Similary inhalation of spray or mist may result in varying degrees of irritation or damage to the respiratory tract tissue and an increase susceptibility to respiratory illness. Continue Section 2
