Section 2
SECTION 2: Hazards identification
DANGER Causes severe skin burns and eye damage. Harmful if inhaled. May cause damage to organs through prolonged or repeated contact. Harmful if swallowed, in contact with skin or if inhaled. CORROSIVE. A solvent used in this product caused liver tumors and kidney effects in test animals. The relevance of these findings to humans is unknown. Reproductive and developmental effects were present in test animals - the relevance of these findings in humans is unknown.
Potential health effects
EYE: Moderate to severe eye irritant. Corrosive to eyes. Can cause permanent eye injury. Symptoms include stinging, tearing, redness, and swelling of eyes. Can injure the cornea and cause blindness. SKIN: Skin irritant. Corrosive to the skin. Can cause permanent skin damage. Symptoms may include redness, burning, and swelling of skin, burns, and other skin damage. Passage of the material into the body through the skin is possible, and skin contact may be harmful. INGESTION: This product if swallowed, can cause severe burns and tissue perforation. Low to moderately toxic. May cause headache, dizziness and gastrointestinal distress. Causes rapid damage to red blood cells and subsequent anemia. Repeated exposure may cause liver and kidney damage. Swallowing this material may be harmful or fatal. Symptoms may include severe stomach and intestinal irritation, abdominal pain, and vomiting blood. Swallowing this material may cause burns and destroy tissue in the mouth, throat, and digestive tract. This material can get into the lungs during swallowing or vomiting. This results in lung inflammation and other lung injuries. INHALATION: Harmful if inhaled, dependent on the extent of exposure.Under normal conditions, using adequate ventilation no problems are expected. May produce symptoms of central nervous system depression including headache, dizziness, nausea, euphoria, loss of equilibrium, drowsiness, visual disturbances, fatigue, unconsciousness and respiratory arrest. Severe overexpsure may cause red blood cell damage. Corrosive. Causes burns to the respiratory tract. CHRONIC (CANCER) INFORMATION: Not listed by IARC or NTP as a carcinogen. TERATOLOGY (BIRTH DEFECT) INFORMATION: Ethylene glycol, CAS # 107-21-1, is a reproductive and developmental toxicant when administered at high doses in experimental animals. REPRODUCTION INFORMATION: May damage rapidly reproducing cells. Monoethanolamine (MEA) caused harm to the fetus in a laboratory animal study in which high doses of the material were placed in the stomachs of the mothers through a feeding tube. In other studies, MEA was not harmful to unborn rats or rabbits when the chemical was given to the mothers by skin contact. Contact with MEA in the workplace at levels which are not harmful to the mother should have no effect on the unborn baby. Does not harm reproductive cells.
