SECTION 2: Hazards identification
This alloy is not regarded as being hazardous when subjected to normal usage. Users should note that occupational exposure control standards exist for some of the components (see paragraph 8) and should remain aware of the need to monitor exposure if powder or fume is produced. Since this solder is, as part of normal usage, heated until molten there is a risk of the production of fumes particularly zinc or zinc oxide. Exposure to such fumes can cause "metal fume fever" with symptoms of chills, fever, coughing and tightness of the chest. Chronic absorbtion of this alloy, which contains silver, may cause "Argyria", a blue/grey discolouration of various tissues. Localised argyria may occur on the skin as a result of particles becoming embedded in the skin or respiratory tract following inhalation of dust. Generalised argyria is recognised by the pigmentation of the skin, eyes and nails and results from the inhalation of silver. This is normally only manifest after many years of over-exposure.
