Health hazards
SPECIFIC TO PRODUCT COMPONENTS EFFECTS OF CHRONIC OVEREXPOSURE TO: XYLENE: Studies have shown a possible association with exposure to xylene and respiratory tract irritation, liver & kidney damage, nausea, and vomiting in humans. Ethylbenzene has been shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals. The relevance of this finding to humans is uncertain. IARC has classified ethyl- benzene as a possible human carcinogen (Group 2B). TOLUENE: Intentional abuse, misuse or other massive exposure to toluene may cause multiple organ (liver, kidney, brain cell) damage and/or death. Comparable CNS effects have not been shown to result from occupational exposure to toluene. Prolonged intentional toluene abuse may lead to hearing loss progressing to deafness. Toluene may be harmful to the human fetus based on positive test results with laboratory animals. Case studies show that prolonged intentional abuse of toluene during pregnancy can cause birth defects in humans. CARCINOGENICITY Based on an IARC conclusion that there is "sufficient evidence in experimental animals for the carcinogenicity of carbon black" and inadequate evidence of carcinogenicity in humans, IARC's overall evaluation is that "carbon black is possibly carcinogenic to humans" (Group 2B). Carbon black has not been listed as a carcinogen by the NTP or OSHA. NIOSH criteria document recommends that only carbon blacks with PAH (polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons) levels > 0.1% be considered suspect carcinogens. Ethylbenzene has been shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals. The relevance of this finding to humans is uncertain. IARC has classified ethylbenzene as a possible human carcinogen, Group 2B. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
