SECTION 2: Hazards identification
CAUTION: KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN This product is an off-white powder with sulfur-like odor. Primary routes of entry are Inhalation, eye contact and skin contact. NOTE TO PHYSICIAN: Coumaphos is an organophosphate insecticide. If symptoms of cholinesterase inhibition are present, atropine sulfate by injection is antidotal. 2-PAM is also antidotal and may be administered, but only in conjunction with atropine. All treatments should be based on observed signs of distress in the patient. Consideration should be given to the possibility that overexposure to materials other than this product may have occurred. Overexposure to this product may cause toxic signs and symptoms due to stimulation of the cholinergic nervous system. These effects of overexposure are spontaneously and rapidly reversible. Improve tissue oxygenation as much as possible before administering atropine to minimize risk of ventricular fibrillation. Mild cases may be given 1 to 2 mg intramuscularly every 10 minutes until full atropinization has been achieved and repeated thereafter whenever symptoms reappear. Severe cases should be given 2 to 4 mg intravenously every 10 minutes until fully atropinized, and then intramuscularly every 30 to 60 minutes as needed to maintain the effect for at least 12 hours. Dosage for children should be appropriately reduced. Complete recovery is to be expected within 24 hours. POTENTIAL ADVERSE HEALTH EFFECTS: Eye Contact: Causes moderate eye irritation. Skin contact: Harmful if absorbed through the skin. May produce symptoms similar to those from ingestion. Ingestion: Harmful if swallowed. Contact a physician if material is ingested. Inhalation: Harmful if inhaled. May cause symptoms similar to ingestion. Contact a physician if material is inhaled and breathing is difficult.
Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure
Persons with depressed cholinesterase levels or hemolytic anemias, or who are under treatment with morphine, theophylline, aminophylline or phenothiazine drugs may show pronounced effects from exposure to this product. Chronic exposure evaluation should be similar to that of pneumonoconiosis.
