SECTION 2: Hazards identification
EMERGENCY OVERVIEW WARNING Dustiiritates theq'es, skinandrespiratory tract. Wetmaterial majfbe slightly caustic andcauseirritation or injuiy. Avoid breartiing excessive dust BieaUiing silica-containing dustibr prolonged periodsin the workplace can cause lung damage and a lungdisease called silicosis. Several scientific organizations haveclassiHed crystalline silicaas causing lung cancerin humans. Silicosis or lung cancer can result in permanent injury or death.
Potential health effects
Prinwiy Routes of Exposure: Eyes, skin, inhalation Eye Contact! Dustparticles canscratchthe eye causing tearing, redness, a stinging or burning feeling, or swellingof the eyes withblurred vision. Wet material may beslightlycaustic and causc irritation orinjiuy. Effects maybecome more serious withrepeated orprolongedcontact SUn Contact; Dust particles canscratch andirritatethe skin witii redness, an itching or burning feeling, swelling of the skin, and/or rash. Wet material may besli^tly caustic andcause irritation, andmaycause contact dermatitis, with^mptoms thatmayinclude (butarenot limit^ to) reddening, irritation and rash. Effects may become more serious with repeated orprolonged contact SMn Absorption: Not expectedto be a significant exposure route following short-term exposure. Inhalation: Duste from hardened product mayirritate themouth, nose, throat andlun^. Coughing sneezing andshortness ofbreath mayoccur. Ingeatlon! Wet material isslightly caustic andcauses tissue irritation. Ingestion of large amounts may cause gastrointestinal irritation including nausea, vomiting and diarrhea and blockage. Effects Fdlowlns Prolonged or Repeated Exposure: If product is subjected to mechanical forces (such as demolition work) which generates dust particles, expos^ to respirable crystalline silica-containing dustis possible. Exposure to high levels ofrespirable ciystalUne silicais associated with silicosis, lung cancer, and autoimmunedisorders. For additional information, sec Section 11. CardnogenteHy: Crystalline silica has been listed asacarcinogen bytheInternational AgencyforResearch onCancer (lARC), the National Toxicology Program (NTP), and/or theOccupational Safety andHealth Administration (OSHA). Foradditional information, seeSection 11. Signs and Symptoms of E]q>osure: Symptoms ofsilicosis may include (but are not limited to)shortness ofbreath, difficulty breathingwith orwithout exertion; coughing; diminished work capacity; diminished chest expansion; reduction oflung volume; right heart eniaigement and/or failure. Medical CondWons Aggravated by Exposure: Pre-existing medical conditions that may be aggravated by exposure include disordera oftheeye, skin and lung including asthma and other breathing disorders. If addicted totobacco, smoking willimpair theability of the lungs toclearthemselves of dust
