Description of first aid measures Eye Contact Generally not applicable. Skin Contact Generally not applicable. If dust is inhaled, remove from contaminated area. Inhalation Encourage patient to blow nose to ensure clear passage of breathing. If irritation or discomfort persists seek medical attention. Generally not applicable. If swallowed do NOT induce vomiting. If vomiting occurs, lean patient forward or place on left side (head-down position, if possible) to maintain open airway and prevent aspiration. Observe the patient carefully. Ingestion Never give liquid to a person showing signs of being sleepy or with reduced awareness; i.e. becoming unconscious. Give water to rinse out mouth, then provide liquid slowly and as much as casualty can comfortably drink. Seek medical advice. Generally not applicable. 4.2 Most important symptoms and effects, both acute and delayed See Section 11 4.3. Indication of any immediate medical attention and special treatment needed Treat symptomatically. SECTION 5 FIREFIGHTING MEASURES 5.1. Extinguishing media Foam. Dry chemical powder. BCF (where regulations permit). Carbon dioxide. Water spray or fog - Large fires only. 5.2. Special hazards arising from the substrate or mixture Fire Incompatibility Avoid contamination with oxidising agents i.e. nitrates, oxidising acids, chlorine bleaches, pool chlorine etc. as ignition may result 5.3. Advice for firefighters Alert Fire Brigade and tell them location and nature of hazard. Fire Fighting Wear breathing apparatus plus protective gloves. Prevent, by any means available, spillage from entering drains or water courses. Use water delivered as a fine spray to control fire and cool adjacent area. DO NOT approach containers suspected to be hot. Cool fire exposed containers with water spray from a protected location. If safe to do so, remove containers from path of fire. Equipment should be thoroughly decontaminated after use. Slight hazard when exposed to heat, flame and oxidisers. Combustible. Will burn if ignited. Combustion products include: carbon monoxide (CO) carbon dioxide (CO2) Fire/Explosion Hazard nitrogen oxides (NOx) other pyrolysis products typical of burning organic material. May emit poisonous fumes. Articles and manufactured articles may constitute a fire hazard where polymers form their outer layers or where combustible packaging remains in place. Certain substances, found throughout their construction, may degrade or become volatile when heated to high temperatures. This may create a secondary hazard. SECTION 6 ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES 6.1. Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures See section 8 6.2. Environmental precautions See section 12 6.3. Methods and material for containment and cleaning up Clean up all spills immediately. Secure load if safe to do so. Minor Spills Bundle/collect recoverable product. Collect remaining material in containers with covers for disposal. Clear area of personnel and move upwind. Alert Fire Brigade and tell them location and nature of hazard. Wear breathing apparatus plus protective gloves. Prevent, by any means available, spillage from entering drains or water course. Stop leak if safe to do so. Contain spill with sand, earth or vermiculite. Collect recoverable product into labelled containers for recycling. Neutralise/decontaminate residue (see Section 13 for specific agent). Collect solid residues and seal in labelled drums for disposal. Wash area and prevent runoff into drains. After clean up operations, decontaminate and launder all protective clothing and equipment before storing and re-using. If contamination of drains or waterways occurs, advise emergency services. Minor hazard. Clear area of personnel. Alert Fire Brigade and tell them location and nature of hazard. Major Spills Control personal contact with the substance, by using protective equipment as required. Prevent spillage from entering drains or water ways. Contain spill with sand, earth or vermiculite. Collect recoverable product into labelled containers for recycling. Absorb remaining product with sand, earth or vermiculite and place in appropriate containers for disposal. Wash area and prevent runoff into drains or waterways. If contamination of drains or waterways occurs, advise emergency services. Clean up all spills immediately. Wear protective clothing, safety glasses, dust mask, gloves. Secure load if safe to do so. Bundle/collect recoverable product. Use dry clean up procedures and avoid generating dust. Vacuum up (consider explosion-proof machines designed to be grounded during storage and use). Water may be used to prevent dusting. Collect remaining material in containers with covers for disposal. Flush spill area with water. 6.4. Reference to other sections Personal Protective Equipment advice is contained in Section 8 of the SDS. SECTION 7 HANDLING AND STORAGE 7.1. Precautions for safe handling Avoid all personal contact, including inhalation. Wear protective clothing when risk of exposure occurs. Use in a well-ventilated area. Prevent concentration in hollows and sumps. DO NOT enter confined spaces until atmosphere has been checked. Safe handling DO NOT allow material to contact humans, exposed food or food utensils. Avoid contact with incompatible materials. When handling, DO NOT eat, drink or smoke. Keep containers securely sealed when not in use. Avoid physical damage to containers. Always wash hands with soap and water after handling. Work clothes should be laundered separately. Launder contaminated clothing before re-use. Use good occupational work practice. Observe manufacturer's storage and handling recommendations contained within this SDS. Atmosphere should be regularly checked against established exposure standards to ensure safe working conditions are maintained. Fire and explosion protection See section 5 Store away from incompatible materials. Other information 7.2. Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities Generally packaging as originally supplied with the article or manufactured item is sufficient to protect against physical hazards. Suitable container If repackaging is required ensure the article is intact and does not show signs of wear. As far as is practicably possible, reuse the original packaging or something providing a similar level of protection to both the article and the handler. Glass container is suitable for laboratory quantities Storage incompatibility Avoid reaction with oxidising agents 7.3. Specific end use(s) See section 1.2 SECTION 8 EXPOSURE CONTROLS / PERSONAL PROTECTION 8.1. Exposure controls Articles or manufactured items, in their original condition, generally don't require engineering controls during handling or in normal use. 8.2.1. Appropriate engineering controls Exceptions may arise following extensive use and subsequent wear, during recycling or disposal operations where substances, found in the article, may be released to the environment. 8.2.2. Personal protection Safety glasses with side shields Chemical goggles. Contact lenses may pose a special hazard; soft contact lenses may absorb and concentrate irritants. A written policy document, describing the wearing of lenses or restrictions on use, should be created for each workplace or task. This should include a review of lens absorption and adsorption for the Eye and face protection class of chemicals in use and an account of injury experience. Medical and first-aid personnel should be trained in their removal and suitable equipment should be readily available. In the event of chemical exposure, begin eye irrigation immediately and remove contact lens as soon as practicable. Lens should be removed at the first signs of eye redness or irritation - lens should be removed in a clean environment only after workers have washed hands thoroughly. Information on toxicological effects The material is not thought to produce either adverse health effects or irritation of the respiratory tract following inhalation (as classified by EC Directives Inhaled using animal models). Nevertheless, adverse systemic effects have been produced following exposure of animals by at least one other route and good hygiene practice requires that exposure be kept to a minimum and that suitable control measures be used in an occupational setting. Ingestion Accidental ingestion of the material may be damaging to the health of the individual. The material is not thought to produce adverse health effects or skin irritation following contact (as classified by EC Directives using animal models). Nevertheless, good hygiene practice requires that exposure be kept to a minimum and that suitable gloves be used in an occupational setting. Skin Contact Open cuts, abraded or irritated skin should not be exposed to this material Entry into the blood-stream, through, for example, cuts, abrasions or lesions, may produce systemic injury with harmful effects. Examine the skin prior to the use of the material and ensure that any external damage is suitably protected. Eye Although the material is not thought to be an irritant (as classified by EC Directives), direct contact with the eye may produce transient discomfort characterised by tearing or conjunctival redness (as with windburn). Chronic Long-term exposure to the product is not thought to produce chronic effects adverse to the health (as classified by EC Directives using animal models); nevertheless exposure by all routes should be minimised as a matter of course.
