SECTION 2: Hazards identification
Emergency overview CAUTION: MAY CAUSE EYE, SKIN AND RESPIRATORY TRACT IRRITATION.
Principle Routes of Exposure
Routes of entry for solids and liquids include eye and skin contact, ingestion and inhalation. Routes of entry for gases include inhalation and eye contact. Skin contact may be a route of entry for liquified gases. Acute toxicity: Ingestion may cause gastrointestinal disturbances. Information on: Polyurethane foam Overexposure to dusts from the foam may cause mechanical irritation of the eyes, skin and respiratory tract. Burning of polyurethane foams may result in the generation of combustion products including, CO, CO2, and hydrogen cyanide. Inhalation of these and other chemicals may result in severe irritation, difficulty breathing, asphyxiation and unconsciousness. Irritation: Irritating to respiratory system. Irritating to eyes and skin. Repeated dose toxicity: Information on: Polyurethane foam In a repeated dose inhalation study, pulmonary lesions and two cancers were reported among a small number of rats exposed to airborne concentrations of 3.6 and 20 mg/m3 polyurethane foam dust. A later study using larger numbers of animals did not show any effects, other than inflammation, at concentrations as high as 20 mg/m3. The significance of the results of the earlier study with respect to human exposure is unknown.
