SECTION 2: Hazards identification
OSHA Emergency Overview Appearance: liquid,, Colorless DANGER! FLAMMABLE LIQUID AND VAPOR. VAPOR MAY CAUSE TEMPORARY BLURRING OF VISION. MAY BE HARMFUL. MAY CAUSE SEVERE BURNS OF RESPIRATORY AND DIGESTIVE TRACTS. HARMFUL IF ABSORBED THROUGH THE SKIN. CAUSES SEVERE BURNS OF THE EYES AND SKIN.
Principle Routes of Exposure
Inhalation, Skin absorption, Skin contact, Eye Contact, Ingestion Eye contact Exposure to liquid can cause irreversible eye damage. Exposure to vapor can cause severe eye irritation. Symptoms may include stinging, tearing, redness, swelling, and halo vision characterized by blurring vision around bright objects. Can injure the cornea and cause blindness. Skin contact Can cause permanent skin damage. Symptoms may include redness, burning, and swelling of skin, burns, and other skin damage. Solutions may be severely irritating or cause burns. Passage of this material into the body through the skin is possible, and skin contact may be harmful. Ingestion Swallowing this material may be harmful or fatal. Symptoms may include severe stomach and intestinal irritation (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea), abdominal pain, and vomiting of blood. Swallowing this material may cause burns and destroy tissue in the mouth, throat, and digestive tract. Low blood pressure and shock may occur as a result of severe tissue injury. Inhalation Breathing of vapor or mist is possible. Breathing this material may be harmful or fatal. Symptoms may include severe irritation and burns to the nose, throat, and respiratory tract. Symptoms are not expected at air concentrations below the recommended exposure limits, if applicable (see Section 8.).
Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure
Preexisting disorders of the following organs (or organ systems) may be aggravated by exposure to this material:, Skin, lung (for example, asthma-like conditions), Liver, kidney, Heart Symptoms Signs and symptoms of exposure to this material through breathing, swallowing, and/or passage of the material through the skin may include:, redness of the skin, stomach or intestinal upset (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea), irritation (nose, throat, airways), cough, choking, discomfort in the chest, central nervous system stimulation (nervousness, restlessness, inability to sleep, tremors), high blood pressure, effects on heart rate, shortness of breath Target Organs Results of an Ashland review of exposure/effect data from 42 foundries indicate that employees can experience visual disturbances ("haze and halos") and possibly other effects at triethylamine concentrations above 3 ppm. Based on this finding, the current ACGIH TLV of 1 ppm for an 8-hour time-weighted average is sufficient to protectemployees from these effects. Short-term exposure to this amine should not exceed 5 ppm. Study results indicate that when an individual experiences visual disturbances, the effects subside within hours after the end of exposure. The odor threshold for triethylamine is less than 1 ppm., Overexposure to this material (or its components) has been suggested as a cause of the following effects in laboratory animals:, kidney damage, liver damage, heart damage Carcinogenicity This material is not listed as a carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the National Toxicology Program (NTP), or the Occupational Safety and Health Administration
