SECTION 2: Hazards identification
Emergency Overview Appearance: liquid, red WARNING! COMBUSTIBLE LIQUID AND VAPOR. MAY AFFECT THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM CAUSING DIZZINESS, HEADACHE OR NAUSEA.VAPOR MAY CAUSE TEMPORARY BLURRING OF VISION. CAUSES EYE IRRITATION. HARMFUL IF ABSORBED THROUGH THE SKIN. MAY CAUSE SKIN AND RESPIRATORY TRACT IRRITATION. PROLONGED OR REPEATED CONTACT MAY DRY SKIN AND CAUSE DERMATITIS AND BURNS.
Principle Routes of Exposure
Inhalation, Skin absorption, Skin contact, Eye Contact, Ingestion Eye contact Can cause severe eye irritation. Symptoms include stinging, tearing, redness, and swelling of eyes. Can injure eye tissue. Skin contact Can cause skin irritation. Symptoms may include redness and burning of skin, and other skin damage. Prolonged or repeated contact may dry the skin. Symptoms may include redness, burning, and drying and cracking of skin, skin burns, and other skin damage. Passage of this material into the body through the skin is possible, and skin contact may be harmful. Ingestion Swallowing small amounts of this material during normal handling is not likely to cause harmful effects. Swallowing large amounts may be harmful. This material can get into the lungs during swallowing or vomiting. This results in lung inflammation and other lung injury. Inhalation Breathing of vapor or mist is possible. Breathing small amounts of this material during normal handling is not likely to cause harmful effects. Breathing large amounts may be harmful. Symptoms are not expected at air concentrations below the recommended exposure limits, if applicable (see Section 8.). Another form of fibrosis, acute silicosis, can occur with exposures to very high concentrations of respirable silica over shorter periods of time, sometimes as short as a few months. Symptoms of acute silicosis include progressive shortness of breath, fever, cough and weight loss. Acute silicosis is fatal. This product may give off a fine particulate fume when heated above 300 degrees C. Smoking cigarettes or tobacco contaminated with polymer dust may give off this fume. Inhalation of polymer fumes may cause "polymer fume fever", a flu-like illness with fever, chills, nausea, shortness of breath, chest tightness, muscle or joint ache, and sometimes cough. The symptoms may not occur until several hours after exposure and are generally temporary, lasting 24-48 hours, even without treatment.
Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure
Silicosis predisposes the individual to the development mycobacterial infections including tuberculosis or to fungal infections. This is most likely to occur after the age of 50 and in association with moderate to severe silicosis., Preexisting disorders of the following organs (or organ systems) may be aggravated by exposure to this material:, Skin, lung (for example, asthma-like conditions), Kidney, Upper respiratory tract, Liver, eye Symptoms Signs and symptoms of exposure to this material through breathing, swallowing, and/or passage of the material through the skin may include:, stomach or intestinal upset (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea), thirst, irritation (nose, throat, airways), runny nose, Cough, central nervous system depression (dizziness, drowsiness, weakness, fatigue, nausea, headache, unconsciousness), Abdominal pain, Difficulty in breathing, irregular heartbeat, anesthesia, lung edema (fluid buildup in the lung tissue), kidney damage, liver damage, lung damage Target Organs Exposure to this material (or a component) has been found to cause kidney damage in male rats. The mechanism by which this toxicity occurs is specific to the male rat and the kidney effects are not expected to occur in humans., Overexposure to this material (or its components) has been suggested as a cause of the following effects in laboratory animals:, nasal damage, eye damage, kidney damage, liver damage, lung damage, Overexposure to this material (or its components) has been suggested as a cause of the following effects in humans:, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, kidney damage Carcinogenicity This product (or a component) is a petroleum-derived material. Similar materials and certain compounds occurring naturally in petroleum oils have been shown to cause skin cancer in laboratory animals following repeated exposure without washing or removal. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the National Toxicology Program (NTP) have determined that there is sufficient evidence in humans for the carcinogenicity of inhaled crystalline silica in the form of quartz or cristobalite. In addition, IARC has determined that there is sufficient evidence for the carcinogenicity of quartz and cristobalite in experimental animals. Among individuals with silicosis, lung cancer occurs more frequently in those who smoke. Reproductive hazard Based on the available information, risk to the fetus from maternal exposure to this material cannot be assessed., Tall oil fatty acids did not cause harm to the fetus when given in the diet of laboratory animals.
Further information
There is some evidence that breathing respirable crystalline silica or the disease silicosis is associated with an increased incidence of immunological disorders and autoimmune diseases such as scleroderma (a disorder manifested by fibrosis of the lungs, skin and other internal organs), systemic lupus erythematosis and sarcoidosis (chronic inflammatory diseases). Nitrites should not be added to this material because this can result in formation of nitrosamines. Many nitrosamines cause cancer in laboratory animals.
