May be harmful if inhaled and ingested. May cause eye and skin irritation. Sodium azide The substance in non-aqueous form may react with acids producing toxic and explosive hydrogen azide. Reactions with heavy metals (In particular, copper, silver, mercury, or their compounds) in the presence of water may produce highly explosive azides. Manufactured in solution at <0.1% by weight, Sodium azide is not explosive with minimal acute toxicity. The substance is irritating to the mucous membranes.
