Potential health effects
EYE: This material causes moderate to severe eye irritation. Direct contact with the solution or exposure to vapors or mists may cause stinging, tearing, redness, swelling and blurred vision. SKIN: This material causes mild to moderate skin irritation. Prolonged or repeated contact may cause redness and burning. Toluene can cause drying and defatting leading to fissured dermatitis. INHALATION: Breathing high concentrations of vapors may cause irritation of the nose and throat and signs of nervous system depression (e.g. headache, drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, blurred vision, loss of coordination and fatigue). Respiratory symptoms associated with pre-existing lung disorders may be aggravated by exposure to this material. INGESTION: Not a probable route of entry into the body. Aspiration of solvent into the lungs during swallowing or vomiting can cause lung inflammation and damage. SUBCHRONIC EFFECTS (Target Organ Effects): Repeated and prolonged occupational overexposure by solvent inhalation may cause damage to the liver, kidney, lung, nervous system and brain.
Potential chronic health
Toluene can cause developmental toxicity, based on animal tests. Chronic overexposure by inhalation of toluene can cause cardiac abnormalities as well as target organ effects listed above. ==============================================================================
