Potential chronic health
Prolonged exposure to oxygen deficient atmospheres (less than 18% oxygen by volume), can adversely affect heart and nervous system. Inhalation No adverse health effects are expected at this concentration of methane, in air. However the methane component is an asphyxiant. Ingestion Not applicable to gases; unlikely route of exposure. Skin Practically non-harmful, as mixture is very similar to air, but may cause physical injury from rapidly expanding gas, if suddenly released. Eye Sudden or uncontrolled gas release may cause physical injury to the eyes.
Further information
Whilst being non-toxic as supplied, the release of large amounts of mixture either through accident or poor work practice, because of its lower density could lead to a build up of methane at higher air-space levels in confined and/or poorly ventilated spaces to hazardous levels. Due caution must be exercised and all exposure standards for components rigorously observed, and atmospheric oxygen levels maintained at 18%.
