34 Section 3 - Hazards Identification EMERGENCY OVERVIEW Appearance: tan. Hygroscopic. Air sensitive. Light sensitive. Danger! Corrosive. Causes eye and skin burns. May cause severe respiratory tract irritation with possible burns. May cause severe digestive tract irritation with possible burns. May cause skin sensitization by skin contact. Target Organs: None. Potential Health Effects Eye: Causes eye burns. Skin: Causes skin burns. May cause skin sensitization, an allergic reaction, which becomes evident upon re-exposure to this material. Ingestion: May cause severe and permanent damage to the digestive tract. Causes gastrointestinal tract burns. Chronic ingestion of iodides during pregnancy has resulted in fetal death, severe goiter, and cretinoid appearance of the newborn. Inhalation: May cause allergic respiratory reaction. Causes chemical burns to the respiratory tract. Chronic: Prolonged exposure to iodides may produce iodism in sensitive individuals. Symptoms could include skin rash, running nose and headache.
