Eye: Causes eye irritation. Skin: Dust may cause mechanical irritation. Ingestion: May cause irritation of the digestive tract. The toxicological properties of this substance have not been fully investigated. Inhalation: Causes respiratory tract irritation. The toxicological properties of this substance have not been fully investigated. Chronic: Animal studies indicate that hafnium compounds cause liver damage. In a study with rats, 9 months after a single intratracheal injection of 50 mg of hafnium oxide, a pronounced cell reaction was found in the lungs around the dust, accompanied by moderate production of collagen fibers in the alveolar walls.
